If its just VLC, you can set the optical drive in Tools>Preferences>Input/Codecs . About the middle of the page you should see a combo box that will list optical drives. As anti says, it could be that VLC is pointing to a different drive. (I think by default it points to /dev/sr0 OR /dev/sr1, depending on which version you install).

Strange problem.
I don't use playing cds very often, but i like to know why it doesn't work.
So i don't know how long the problem realy exists.
Will have a look if i can still burn cds for the car.

Burning cds still works.
The computer burns a cd,but cannot read , the player in the car can read it.
But why?

None of your fstab entries are valid for audio cds because fstab is all about mounting devices. Also, you might be better off with a filesystem type of"auto" instead of"udf,iso9660" but as I said, these entries don't apply to audio cds.
If spacefm or some other program is trying to auto-mount your audio cds then you could try commenting out the lines in fstab for the device you want to play audio cds on. If something is trying to auto-mount your audio cds, that could possibly prevent them from playing. You might want to take a look at the dmesg output when you try to play an audio cd without trying to mount it.
You cannot mount audio cds. They don't have a file system on them to mount. That is why you were getting the error messages when you tried to mount an audio cd with spacefm. You can only play audio cds, you cannot mount them. If they fail to play now, perhaps your attempts at mounting an audio cd put the cdrom device in an unhappy state.caprea wrote:Hello,my pc can't read cd's anymore. It doesn't matter if they are burned or original. If i try to open them with spacefm

Hello bitjam ,thank you for answer.
I don't know why but now I can play cds with vlc.
But not with xmms or mplayer.
Maybe you are right and i confused everything with trying to mount but even if itry to play a cd without using spacefm or mounting the dmesg tail shows the same output.
Also i saw that if i boot the pc with an audio cd inside the dmesg, just after booting and doing nothing, shows many lines with a similar output.
and hundred lines more
Anyway, one player that works is enough for me.Thank you for help.

What kernel are you using (inxi -F)?
I wonder if anyone else can replicate this? Google is not helpful because there too much noise about mounting/playing audio cds in general.
There does seem to be a problem here. Unless your system boots to the desktop in 3 seconds, these errors are occurring before X and the window manager have even started.caprea wrote: i saw that if i boot the pc with an audio cd inside the dmesg, just after booting and doing nothing, shows many lines with a similar output.

is it possible that sr1 is the odd hardware caprea mentioned earlier in the thread?

Well, maybe I was wrong and it is supposed to do that although it seems nuts to me to fill up the ring buffer with useless messages.
If your total boot time is really only 7 seconds then you could try is to boot into runlevel 3 using a"3" boot parameter. This will prevent X from starting and you can log into a virtual console to check dmesg.
If you don't get the flood then that means it is probably caused by some auto-mounting code perhaps in your ~/.$WINDOW-MANAGER/startup script. My gut feeling is that this is the most likely explanation. Then, if the gods are smiling upon us, when you disable the auto-mounting, the flood will stop and the other programs will be able to play the cd.
I have a couple of other ideas but they are more far-fetched.

Edit:
There is also a system with 2xoptical drives that boots 14Ra1 Live OK from CD-ROM,
I have a few systems with 1 or 2 optical drives. If tests are still wanted I can try them if it will help. What test is wanted? The systems are all hard disk antiX installations, various kernels, IIRC running Stable repo.BitJam wrote:I wonder if anyone else can replicate this?

Thanks SamK! I want to know if the output of the"dmesg" command gets filled with messages like those posted above by caprea when you boot when there is an audio cd in one of the optical drives. If you don't get the flood of message then for bonus points try uncommentingin the startup file of your window manager and trying again.
I doubt the kernel would be doing this on its own. That seems to leave: the Debian initramfs, some kind of automounting gone awry, or maybe a problem with udev.

Ah, maybe the problem is caused by that kind of auto-starting combined with entries in the fstab like:Maybe the problem would go away if caprea just comments out those entries. I'm grasping at straws here.
Code: Select all
#spacefm -d

Off Topic
I'm uncertain how much value to place on the above results. Over a long period I have found using optical drives in antiX to be unpredicatable across a wide range of hardware. There is no pattern I can discern.
For example on two of the three systems tested today, once antiX had booted, the tray could not be ejected using the physical button on the tray face. Ejecting via ROX-Filer or SpaceFM was possible. Then without notice these methods also failed. Once this failure condition is present often running the following command in a terminal will do the trick. This usually works but now returns the following error message on one system.
I picked up the tip to use eject -i from a post by another forum user some time ago so I am reasonably sure the issues are seen more widely than the kit in use here.
I don't know if the additional info helps with the posted problem, but is mentioned in case in case it assists with diagnosis. I do not recall a similar matter using CD-ROMs in Tinycore.
Edited to improve clarity.

Code: Select all
sudo eject -i [on off]
Code: Select all
eject: tried to use '/dev/cdrom' as device name but it is no block device
eject: unable to find or open device for: 'cdrom'
I don't know if the additional info helps with the posted problem, but is mentioned in case in case it assists with diagnosis. I do not recall a similar matter using CD-ROMs in Tinycore.
Edited to improve clarity.

Thanks SamK. Can you comment out those two lines in fstab and try again?
I do think this problem may be related to the eject problems you have had. My experience (from a while ago) was that if you get a bunch of errors from a device then something eventually gives up and you lose the ability to eject.
Another approach would be to boot with a LiveUSB when an audio CD is inserted. Use"bp=8" and"from=usb" See if the error messages are in the dmesg output at the breakpoint. If not, but if they do appear after you cmplete the boot process then the culprit could be udev.
