I have been posting on the forum some time about problems getting a wireless card to work on my laptop and I was advise to download some support files which would be needed with a wireless card. I have not been able to download these files so I have tried to get a wired ethernet to work with this laptop so that I can download these files, but I cannot get the wired ethernet to work either. I am running Antix 8.5. The ethernet card eth0 is listed if I do an ip but or ifconfig, but am struggling to know how to get the ethernet to work.

I am a newbie to the world of Linux so some basic help will be appreciated so that I can this lappie working.

I do not want to have to go back to windows.

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary. Ethernet hard line connection has always been painless for me in AntiX whether using PCMCIA Ethernet Carbus on really ancient dial up only laptop or newer built in Ethernet jack on Laptop or Desktop.

Since I am not familiar with your computer. Can you post a link to your wireless thread also.

Usually Control Center>Network>Wicd connects up my Hardline from the get go.

Not sure why You are having any trouble. Is modem using dhcp?

Also, please post the output of

inxi -F (type it in a terminal)

to see if Antix sees your card and which card it is.

thanks.

The good news is that Antix detects the card. Did you try ceni? wicd? Neither one worked to configure your network?

You could try this in a terminal, as root:

ifdown eth0
ifup eth0

Good luck!

the expansion card ethernet will be fine. you won't notice a difference. In some circumstances it could actually be faster, depending on the age of the machine. Just make sure they send you the same kind of port (10/100 or gigabit) that you are replacing.
