Hi,

after running AntiX in A VB I tried a life install. That wasn't as successful. I can't change my resolution to 1280 x 1024. When I try all I see is gibberish on the screen. I am locked in 2048 x 1543. My eyes hurt ....

Using:

2.0 Celeron
1.2 Gb ram
Nvidia GeForce FX5200 Ultra
19" CRT Monitor (LG)

Change the vga entry in grub to 788. Didn't help.
Any ideas welcome

Try installing the driver from NVIDIA, maybe. With the sgfxi script.

That worked fine, thank you - I can change the resolution. Problem is now - it doesn't stick and I need to redo it every time I log out and back in again. Any way I can make this stick?

you could also try this

another thing you could try is, if you have"hwinfo" installed, you can open up the terminal, go to root, then type"hwinfo --framebuffer" in without the quotes. It will come up with sommething like this

Code: Select all

 Memory Range: 0xe0000000-0xe076ffff (rw)
  Mode 0x0360: 1280x800 (+1280), 8 bits
  Mode 0x0361: 1280x800 (+2560), 16 bits
  Mode 0x0362: 1280x800 (+5120), 24 bits
  Mode 0x0305: 1024x768 (+1024), 8 bits
  Mode 0x0317: 1024x768 (+2048), 16 bits
  Mode 0x0318: 1024x768 (+4096), 24 bits
pick the resolution you want and change the vga entry in grub to one of the numbers after"mode" like"vga=0x0317" Each video card uses their own special vga code, so your is probably different.

Thank you to all for trying to help. The best I got was a correct resolution but suddenly the screen was to small and I had to use the mouse to reach the extends while the desktop moved in all directions on the screen. Interesting - but not what I wanted.

I need to get this to work - kind of basics really...

I do realise the forum is sparsely visited so I won't get my hopes too high ... __{{emoticon}}__

Got it going by installing some Nvidia stuff in Synaptic and running nvidia-settings as root .

Thanks again to all who tried to help. I'll mark this as solved.

Now - up to the next mission. Print on a network printer running on Windows - up, up and away ....
