I have been tinkering around with various linux distros on this laptop. AntiX 13.2-amd64 and MX-14 have been my main distros.

I found out that you need to always check the md5sum regardless of where you download it from. It is better to be safe than sorry. I don't know how many times I have fought with a distro only to learn that the md5sum wasn't correct in the first place. So back to square one.

Keep notes. Although you could swear on a stack of beer bottles, sometimes you may think you did a step you forgot about. __{{emoticon}}__ How many guys have stopped to recheck their zipper before leaving the bathroom? __{{emoticon}}__ Like they say in construction, measure twice, cut once.

Have fun. Unless your job depends on it, enjoy yourself. Never get so serious about what you are doing that you forget to enjoy it. You would be surprised about some of the jokes we played when I worked in a funeral home.

'Nuff said.

Thank you all for your input. At least now I know where I stand. I guess you can call this issue as I originally posed it as “resolved” as I now have access to Synaptic and neither my browser nor my PC crashes as before. We do have a lot of power surges in this country- bad electric service and very expensive- giving rise to occasional problems with crashing my PC. We get by, however. Things seem to be working OK for now with minimal error messages. I have checked out your article on md5sum and, quite frankly, it's a bit over my head but I will attempt to understand it for any future installs. In the meantime, this issue is basically resolved for me. Again, thank you guys for walking me through this.

Whenever you download a file, see if it also has a file for MD5SUM or md5 or a notation on that website about the md5. Once you have completed the download, use a terminal to go to that folder where the file is and then enter the following command.

Code: Select all

md5sum (name-of-file)
This will generate a"hash" (the md5sum series of numbers and letters) and compare that to the original md5sum. If they are the same, good. If not, then someone either tampered with the file OR during the download you lost a segment of the file. Try re-downloading it and recheck.

Unfortunately, windoze has some great GUI programs to make these comparisons easier than Linux.

Forum members, my version of AntiX- AntiX 14R alpha-1- is already beginning to manifest problems with its instability. It frequently crashes my PC and/or freezes up on me. Either way, I suppose its time for me to install a safer more stable version of Antix on this old but reliable clunker of a computer. I love Antix and have learned quite a bit about Linux using it already. My question: which is the best and most stable (hence up-dateable) version and can anyone of you help me get a clean install (i.e. iso)?

Thanks for your continued help.

The stable version is antiX-13.2 available here:

Anticapitalista,

Thank you so much for the link to the Source Forge page and for the information. I truly appreciate it!

Alpha's are always fun. You do your best to try to find and replicate the problems for someone else to fix.

How would like to be the first test pilot on a Solar Powered airplane doing a Night Flight?

Anticapitalista,

I'm a bit awed by the choices on the Sourceforge page you recommended. Which one do I pick? The last time I created a live USB stick I chose the 32 bit version of Antix although I picked the wrong (unstable 14 R Alpha 1) version. I'm a bit confused as to the ones ending in md5. Which 13.2 stable version do I choose?

antiX-13.2_386-full.iso is likely best for you.
antiX-13.2_386-full.iso.md5 contains the download checksum.
which should be: ce0a62f606796f4f99a2fabca3c7a129 antiX-13.2_386-full.iso

Thank you very much fatmac.

Forgive me for sounding ignorant. So which one is the best straight forward download for me? I wouldn't know what a checksum is if it fell on me right now. Just want to have a stable version of antiX.
