Hi everyone, was referred here from the Mepis Community Forum. I have an old laptop with Linux Mint 13 on it, which works but is a bit slow. I have tried both MX-14, and MX-8 from live usb's and MX-8 is better in almost every respect (I have never had a computer run so fast) I know it's really old, but can I still use MX-8? I assume my biggest issues would be security and support/updates? This will not be an important laptop, just for word processing (Abiword seems ok, but will LibreOffice work?) playing music and light internet browsing via cable (no banking ect). I would probably not even bother with updates so long as it's working. Thanks.

If it works & you are happy with the older versions of software & possible security risks, go ahead & install/use it. __{{emoticon}}__

N.B. As it is old, you may not be able to upgrade it very easily.

IMHO I would go up to antiX 13.1 and see how she runs on your machine. You may well be surprised.

Thanks guys. My main concern is that if it breaks would I still be able to fix it. I may give 13.1 a try.

Is 13.2 a better bet? And I'm assuming the 386 is the one to go for. Thanks

All you said was you had a old computer. Without knowing exactly what Brand, Model, and Year of it, I simply suggested 13.1 since it will run on older 64MB old PII 266 systems. Once you get it installed, you can go to the Terminal and post"inxi -F" back here for us to see.

Sorry I was a bit vague. It's a HP P4 with 320Mb ram from around 2004.

13.2 32bit will be just fine and dandy on a P4. Ram is a little weak but AntiX 13.2 will live with that.

Make sure you add a swap partition. Keep web browsing to a minimum. Don't use tabs in your browser.

A P4 will work perfectly with 13.2 32 bit, like roky says. And a swap partition will help easing the memory backlogs, like BitJam says. Have fun.

Just ran it as a live session and was quite pleased, have a few questions. Is there any way to set up the touchpad? I am a bit ham-fisted so I always disable tap-to-click on laptops (this is important to me) Secondly, I see no calendar/organiser app. I'm assuming Clawsmail has one but I don't need a mail server. I'm sure I could use Orage calendar or Korganiser from synaptics though? Lastly, how do I set up the swap partition? I'm not very tech-savvy and just use defaults when doing installations. Thanks.

You will be running Debian so anything you want. Debian will have it. You will only be limited by hardware specs as far as I can tell.
Your specs are almost the Same as my Amrel Toughbook with 512MB of ram.
