anti - Adding nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0 noxorg to the boot line doesn't change the outcome. The last line I see is: waiting for dev to be fully populated
Then it wanders off into the weeds and get lost.

Try again. That /dev error is new isn't it? ie not the same one you had before when failing to boot into X, or am I missing something?

I think it is the same. If I take out quiet, then the lines go by so fast I can't see them and then the screen goes blank. But if I leave quiet in the boot line, I get 5 or 6 lines, the last being"waiting for dev to be fully populated" and then the screen goes blank.

If it gets past this by booting into init 3 by adding a 3 to the end of the grub boot line, try adding a 5 to the end of the grub boot line.
If that does not work, boot into init 3 and try reinstalling grub, make sure you make a backup of your current grub. Before reinstalling grub run update-initramfs -u -t.
Here is a decent example of renstalling grub

Have not had time to try to get antiX 11 working. I installed antiX 8.5 and it boots up and runs fine. This is for a friend of mine for his grandson. I do have a question for anyone - Does antiX work with iTunes? I have not used iTunes, but his grandson does.

Forgive my ignorance. Are you saying that in order for him to download itunes he has to run a Microsoft program it can't be done in Linux? Or am I missing something?
Edit - I think I answered my own question. iTunes is a program. Here I thought iTunes was just that, songs that you could download. Which I guess it is but the program to do that is also called iTunes. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Now I need to learn wine.

iTunes is only made for windows and macs and is a media player program, so if he wanted to install iTunes, he would have to install it through wine. There are plenty of alternatives to itunes. Here's some

buttcoffee - Thanks. I guess I need to also learn about wine. Not sure if I have enough time as my friend is expecting to get the laptop back tomorrow.
