For some reason avi format movies have a jerky playback, when in full screen mode, using gxine or VLC players.
Is there a way to correct this?

Have you installed the nvidia drivers using smxi/sgfxi?
Or used the free nouveau driver? (Just remove the lines referring to nouveau at boot menu.

I removed nouveau at the boot menu, and it did the trick.
Now how do I make the change,? so I don't need to do this at each boot.

As root edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and remove those options
