I want to use my machine for playing my record collection which i want to convert to MP3 format, and then hold on an external hard drive, so that I can save some space in the living room. I have Antix installed, but I'm not sure about playing CDs from the CD rom, or audio files from the hard drive, or external hard drive.

Have a look at the FAQ.

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://sblinux.org/antix/index.html"
linktext was:"http://sblinux.org/antix/index.html"
====================================
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false

For external hard drive, the drive needs to be mounted. Do this via the filer (Rox or pcmanfm), in /media folder and once plugged in your external drive should pop up.
Navigate to where your files are and just click on them.

as a first step - to make sure audio was playing I followed the instructions for playing a CD with XMMS, but a box popped up with:
Create Directory|Delete File|Rename File
Directories |Files
/
../
Documents/
Rox/
Wallpaper

Selection
Play|Add|Close

For playing cd's, put in the cd, from the menu use an app called xmms (can't remember where it is on menu in antiX-M8.2 _ I assusme that is the version you are using).

Once xmms is open, click on the forward button (second from left) to start the CD.
Or, if it doesn't work, in amms -> top button on left -> Play location -> Button on right, highlight /media/cdrom
-> Ok -> press xmms play button.

xmms.

Which version of antiX are you using?

Type
cat /etc/antix-version
in a terminal to find out.
