@fatmac, it was not advertised as well as it should have been. This is an area where I keep falling short.  Your comment was spot-on for the manual way of doing it.   On a fast machine, I can boot live, do the frugal install (via F5) and be at the installed X windows desktop all in under 30 seconds.  It's crazy fast.

Have you tried"F5 Persist" -->"frugal" in the bootloader?  IMO this is *far* easier to set up than a normal install.  If installing to an ssd I suggest going with the frugal_static option.
Actually i dont even get the options to choose ,i get only a basic grub command line

I can edit with the option"e" the options and then boot with ctrl+x or F10(i think)
I tried to edit and change the uuid and the hd0 to hd1 (I copied whatever there was in my live options and changed only the hd0 to hd1 and the uuid.
this didnt work either,i got a message :
you first have to load a kernel.....

So how do i"load a kernel"??:):)

total newb here,so pls be patient

Frugal install is an option in the bootloader of  the live system, not an installed system.   It's an alternative to doing a regular install.

Too add to Bitjams post.  I'd start over. While running live off usb before even running the installer. I'd open Gparted and look graphically at what my drives are ordered up as before rebooting and starting the install. Having 3 drives. The live usb. The 4 gig phison drive. The 16 gig phison drive. Can make things a little a tough on a new user. Pencil and paper are my friend also when I do things like this.

If I still had my dual drive eeepc 900. I'd try the frugal option BitJam is talking about and write the tutorial . But I sold mine. My atom netbooks are now single drive netbooks. We used to have members here still using dual drive eeepcs. But I have not seen them post in a long while.
