This is quite possibly not the place to raise this. I've been using this for a while, it seems OK, I just wondered if anyone else knew anything or had on opinion about it?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. The iceweasel set up I got with my antiX download included Google, Yahoo & Bing as search options - also something called DuckDuckGo. I have been using Startpage as search engine for about 6 months (before I started using antiX) but had to import it and set it as my default in antiX. It may be an Australian company. It is connected to another search engine called Ixquick.
Its USP is privacy of searching. As I understand it, it appears to use the Google database but hides your identity - Google can't track you. It has various certificates from the EU and the Dutch. However, having said that and having read its literature, a suspiciious mind (ie: mine) might be concerned that it might have closer connections to Google than are apparent.
I spotted the improbably named DuckDuckGo on the menu over the weekend and looked at it to see what it was. It has much the same manifest as Startpage but I'm not sure how good a search engine it is. I admit, comparing search engines is a bit anoraky - rather like comparing the various merits & demerits of particular teaspoons, I was just curious to see if anyone knew anything, had an opinion or whatever.

Oh, I didn't know there was a startpage...startpage.
I thought you were talking about whatever came with antix, oh well!
From the little bit I read in your link, it seems it is similar-ish to the incognito window in chrome,
or private browsing in firefox?
I used duckduckgo for a while, but I didn't get the search results I wanted, sometimes.
Most of the stuff it didn't find, was things you don't want people to know you are searching for, __{{emoticon}}__
like somewhat hard to find tech stuff for car electronics, and such. __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__
There might be some kind of setting I am missing or something, I didn't really try too hard.
But anyway, so, it does not store who you are, or what you search for, but once you open the search result site...
everything is back to the usual, and.. well, what am I missing here?
But then, I am not the brightest when it comes to these things,
so I hope someone will have some useful info for us.

It has been ages that i used google.
One reason is that it will ask you for capchtas (spelling?) when using tor.
For a while i switched between startpage and duckduckgo, now i mainly use duckduckgo.
I also tried seeks and yacy, but couldn't get it figured out (seeks being slightly more comfortable than yacy).

"But anyway, so, it does not store who you are, or what you search for, but once you open the search result site..." I'd never looked at that way RC - depressing!
And, Nadir, thanks for the pointer to Seeks and Yacy, I'd never heard of them. There is another engine called Wolfram which describes itself as a computational knowledge engine. It's interesting, but I've never fathomed how to work it.
as RC says, maybe someone else has more insight - but thanks to you both for getting back!
