Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xmms : Depends: libesd0 (>= 0.2.35) but it is not installable
xmms-plugins-antix : Depends: mplayer but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

This is what I have tried so far, to try fix the problem.

Code: Select all

apt-get clean
apt-get update &&  apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get --fix-broken install
apt-get upgrade &&  apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
dpkg --configure -a
apt-get update –fix-missing
apt-get install -f
Nothing seems to work, or am I forgetting something.

Are you installing through the MX package installer?

I just tried installing thru the mx-package-installer. Installed without any problems.

***mplayer installs from the mepis community repo. Its quite possible, depending on what time you tries to install xmms, that the repo was down for maintenance. They tend to do that on sunday nites. The other packages install from either the antix/daveserver or from the debian repos. so try an apt-get update and apt-get install xmms and see if things work this today***

Yeah DO. I like rolling with Audacious also because it has killer plugins included with it also. Plus xmms skins work on it.

I'll try it again, just to see what happens.

Have you installed anything from deb-multimedia or anything like that?

have you tried just installing mplayer and seeing what if any dependency problems it gives you?

**edit** same for this: libesd0 (>= 0.2.35) but it is not installable

That library installed fine for me here, so its got to be some kind of conflict with an app you've installed already.

I just did an"aptitude purge xmms" then apt-get install xmms and it installed perfectly.
It must have been a broken package that was stopping it from installing properly.

Thank you, it is just what I need, it works great for short sound sample files.
