antiX is a Linux distribution, originally based on MEPIS which itself is based on the Debian testing distribution. It initially replaced the MEPIS KDE desktop environment with the Fluxbox and IceWM window managers, making it suitable for older, less powerful x86 based systems. antiX was originally available in 2 flavours: Full which installs a full range of applications, and Base which allows the user to choose their own application suite.

Chances are it was with MEPIS 6.0; I know my first antiX download (that I can remember was in 2006; my first MEPIS download was in May 2003 BEFORE the first OFFICIAL release! Not sure I tested the first antiX internal release or not. I'll check the archives but I think the MEPIS forums have changed since then so finding records of all of this may be an interesting challenge.

post21272.html gives the answer. I knew that I could find it if the information was still out there, and I knew that Google would either point to it here or somewhere else; didn't take too long to find it once I had the time to run a few searches!

No big surprise! I did not run the very first internal release, but I was around the MEPIS forums way back then and it did not take me long to find your build. Once I found it, I saw some similarities to what Warren had done BEFORE he went from a light live system to a full-featured KDE-based system. So as soon as I noticed your variation, I jumped on it and have used it ever since.

I tend to keep both a stable version of Warren's work in case any of my systems start acting up, and I generally have at least two copies of antiX (two installed on my Gateway portable right now, plus another one on my Lenovo laptop and several copies of CDs and DVDs I can run live, though my move from New Hampshire to Michigan was not without cost; I left MANY old CDs behind including the M6.5 I used and the M7.0 I used after that, sad to say).

As much of a fan of MEPIS as I've been, I've been even more a fan of antiX and I frequently say so. More importantly, the distro I have successfully installed on my MOM's laptop, the neighbor's desktop (across the street) and the distro I've convinced several friends to run is antiX!

So to have me be the one to know this and also to be smart enough to check Google to be sure ought to come as no big surprise.

But let's just make sure we help more new friends get used to antiX - and congratulate anticapitalista once again for a great vision - and for listening to those who use the stuff here (we, they, us) are the ones that collectively, along with anti, Dave, John, and others over the years, have put together some really good stuff - let's keep it up and keep it a free and collaborative alternative!
