Hi There,

I'am relatively new to Antix, so mayby my endeavour is futile. Nevertheless, I share you all my plan.

Disposing of an old 32 bit Celeron Machine with 512Kb Ram memory and 30 GB HDD, I wanted to convert this old laptop into a sound machine:

1) Install a lightweight Linux Distro

2) Strip it from everything unnecessary (like office programms etc.)

3) Install and RT kernel

4) Tweak ALSA

5) Connect the machine to my Home NAS server (another old dumped machine that is)

6) Play music via USB to externel sound card + active speakers

First two steps are no problem. Antix installed and stripped so far.

But the RT kernel. It can be just me, but I really feel kernel documentation is a bit lacking. .
OK I understand about kernel versions and that I just need an RT patch and install it via terminal dpkg etc.

The thing is: were do I find an RT patch for the current ANTIX kernel (latest version)?

Uname -r says that my machine is currently working under 4.0.5-antix.1-486-smp

Is there any out there?

Thanks for all the help

Cor

I don't know if this is what you are after, but the liquorix kernel supports real time with RCU according to their homepage.

The liquorix repos are predefined in antiX. Just enable them in Synaptic (settings>repositories), reload your sources, and select the liquorix kernel appropriate for your system.

are you going to play music, with an instrument, or are you going to play already recorded music (like mp3's and such)

Do you really need an rt kernel?

Ask eino, he made a music respin.

Hi,

Thanx for all the help

@ RustCollector: as a first I want to playback recorded music, but in some time in the near future, I think about emulating keyboards.

@Dolphin_oracle: thank you very much indeed and I think I will check out your video's.

I used the liquorix kernel, with one of my builds. It worked better than the RT kernels that was available. I had very little latencies with the liquorix kernel installed recording from my musical keyboard to LMMS.
I had to tweak alsa a little but everything was found using aconnect. I rarely needed Jack.
This piece is my wife singing using, my mixing board plugged in via a usb, and recorded with Audacity.

My best sound machine __{{emoticon}}__

Code: Select all

inxi -M
Machine: System: Hewlett-Packard product: HP Compaq nx6310 (RH325ET#ABE) v: F.09
           Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 30AA v: KBC Version 58.12
           Bios: Hewlett-Packard v: 68YDU Ver. F.09 date: 09/15/2006

I think a RT kernel is not necessary for listen music and for record music (midi) maybe neither with the latest kernel's versions.
