Unfortunately the last few releases of antiX have a i686 type kernel. One option would be to install the hard drive into another machine and install antix. Once installed you could add a Debian i386 or 486 kernel and remove the mepis one. Reinstall the hard drive and the machine should boot. Make sure you use the vesa video driver so x will start then change to what you need later.

could i use apt-get to do this? do you know the name of the package?
if it is just a matter of installing a package, imho... i would think that the default should be the real i386 kernel. that way everyone can boot and install and then it would be an easy upgrade to i686.
thanks for the help.
