Not sure if you actually did install OOo. Try getting the whole download ( large .gz file containing the deb files, nb file arrangement is different from debian's) from OpenOffice.org, ie not from debian, and get the jre stuff you need from debian. Did this successfully recently with antiX-486, on a P200MMX. ie no synaptic or apt-get (tho' this is the main topic here).
edit.... forgot to add a caveat. Beware of using the OOo version of updating the menu. cf my experience using-old-hardware-thread, and the workaround. Otherwise a good exp. and really easy to delete the whole shebang if you wish.
