antiX-M8.5 'Marek Edelman' released

9 months since the release of antiX-M8.2, the antiX-team announce that antiX MEPIS 8.5 'Marek Edelman' - a fast, light, flexible and complete desktop and livecd based on SimplyMEPIS and Debian Testing - is now available in full and base versions (686 and 486 kernel). This release defaults to a fully customised icewm desktop (fluxbox, wmii and dwm are also installed) using a SimplyMEPIS 2.6.32-11 kernel, tweaked MEPIS Assistants for better compatibility in antiX and the usual range of applications for desktop use. Iceape for internet needs, Abiword and gnumeric for office use, xmms and goggles music manager for audio, gxine, mplayer and gnome-mplayer for video, wicd and ceni for network connection, pidgin for chat. Many cli apps are also included such as Alpine for email, moc for audio, links2 for browsing, abcde and ripit for cd ripping and much more. New features include live with persistence, 'remaster on the fly', new boot cheatcodes for setting dpi and desktop windows manager, antix2usb to easily install to usb stick. 12 languages are fully supported out of the box with the language chosen at live CD boot carrying over to install.

antiX works on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM, though 128MB RAM is the recommended minimum and the 486 kernel version should work on AMD K5/k6. antiX is fast and has low RAM usage running live or installed.

antiX-M8.5 and antiX-M8.5-base (486 and 686) are finally available, at the moment, here (thanks carlops):

My first stumbling block. I am running Live USB 8.5 Final. I am taking screenshots for my nect tutorial for installing on EEEPC 900. I opened Gparted and my 900 has 2 internal SSD Drives. One is 4 gig. The other 16 gig.

I was happily formatting and made 4 gig partition / ext2 file system sda1 flagged as boot.
Formatted 16 gig sdb1 as ext2 /home. I think you are starting to see my problem.

I have root on one drive. /home on another drive. That is the way these EEEPC 900 are built.
So humming right along through the Mepis installer. I get to the page on installer where to install AntiX.
I pick sda of course since it is the root partition.

Go to the next page. Root is going to sda. I have no swap partition because of SSD drive. When I get to the menu for where I wish /home to go. I hit the arrow tab in the box and my only selection option is root. sdb is not a option. I know that this is incorporated into Mepis installer. It can only install /home to one drive at a time. It is the way Mepis Installer is built. Sooooooo. I am in a conodrum here. __{{emoticon}}__

It never came to mind that this would happen as I have always installed AntiX to a single drive system. What is a Biker to do?

can you go through with the install, and then move your"home" to the other drive/partition afterwards?

Sure, But This may put off a newbie when it comes to installing AntiX on one of these Netbboks.

I need a link also on how to move /home of off root or some kind of directions so I can show how it is done in the tutorial. First time I have ever had to move /home to another drive.

I think SilverBear has a tutorial somewhere that does this via symlinks from a /root home to another partition /home.

A bit of a pain, but as you say, the installer doesn't allow /home on a separate partition.

One good news that isn't antiX specific is that gksu is remembering the password. I think I never saw it work before (I almost thought there was something wrong __{{emoticon}}__

Ok. After looking over Silver bears tutorial. I have so far created a symlink for /home from /dev/sda1 to /dev/sdb1 using rox filer as root user.

I haven;t done anything to /etc/fstab yet as I am not sure I need to as sdb1 mounts any ways

So does it look like I have things arraigned right as far as having sdb1 being used as my /home drive/directory or is sda1 gonna fill up and sdb1 will just point to it? Like I said. I am in virgin territory.

Edit: thinking about it some. I don't think this way is gonna work out. I took a couple screenshots and they went straight to /root/home. sdb1 just points to it. I am not moving /root/home to /dev/sdb1/home symlinking I guess.

roky, you should delete your /home in sda1 (don't do it, I'll tell why below) and point you /home in sdb1 to sda1 (drag from sdb1 to sda1 and choose Link (absolute)).
sdb1 will need to be auto-mounted. /etc/fstab says noauto (should be auto) but if you're saying that it is auto-mounted at boot time then maybe it's something else that's managing it.
Before you delete your /home in sda1 you should copy ~/.xinitrc from it to your old /home in sdb1 because it changed in final (I don't know if there's anything else to be copied, I think not). Then you can delete sda1 /home and link sdb1 /home to sda1.

which did copy everything over to sdb1 and I hade a complete home file in sdb1. But. I screwed up and tried to delete sda1 /home while running and lost everything in sdb2 when I deleted /home and /old_home. Still messing with it. So now for a new reinstall. Learning slowly but surely. This is going to be too complicated for a tutorial though for a newbie to follow to install on a dual drive EEEPC. Flash install is easier since it is just one drive.

It is because the partition/drive that /home is on Anti is only 4 gig.

The other 16 gig drive is usually used for /home in other distros like Xandros and Ubuntu (I think ubuntu installer has the option, I may be wrong though about installing Ubuntu /home on another drive though maybe since I haven't tried it). That is why I am trying to default /home to the other drive. To keep the 4 gig drive from filling up to fast and use the 16 gig drive that is there to use. I hope that makes it clear on why I am doing what I am doing. Complicated I know.

M.E. with lxde-core
I had to sid'fy it because lxde wouldn't work in testing (actually that was the reason for me to try sid in antiX for the first time some time ago). PCManFM bug, I didn't even bother reporting and such since it's ok in sid. It works fine in testing if we set openbox-session with lxpanel and etcetera though, it's basically the same (except that LXDE is an independent DE, that is, its gtk and icon settings and others are set only for it independently than the system-wise settings) and these are the packages that come with lxde-core (plus LXDE's own settings- lxsession, lxde-common).

Woo hoo, anti! Way to go! I know it seemed a bit long in coming, compared to the fast turnaround on some of the earlier releases, but there is a lot of new good stuff in here, well worth the wait. Great job, everyone who helped anti out to make this happen. I've been trying to get around to a few of my usual spots to let people know about this. Had some help; someone covered Linux Questions, I believe. I got USALUG, Desktop Linux Reviews Forum and Extreme Tech earlier today for starters. Will take a moment and contact Raiden's Realm, that ought to be a decent start! __{{emoticon}}__

I think I was succesful Anti. I did it the caveman way using rox as root. It was simple to do using Silverbears and Mepis thread links plus my own take on how I might do this. Refer to my other thread

If I did this right. All it entails is dragging and dropping the same /home file using rox as root user and creating a symlink to /home from sda1 pointing to sdb1. Then editing /etc/fstab like I did. I might be able to write a tutorial after all if my method was sound.
