I've been using 6.5 and decided to try 7. I get...
"Couldn't find MEPIS file system, sorry."
(or something similar) when trying to boot.
I've also tried failsafe mode.

Any advice?

Sounds like a bad burn to me.

Try burning at very low speed, x4.
