Hi. First post here. I'm a Mepis user since 6, currently using MX14 & MX16. This is my first experience with antiX.
I was given an IBM Thinkpad X22 mini-laptop, running Windows XP. I thought antiX would be perfect for this machine - 800MHz mobile PIII, 382M ram. No optical drive, no floppy drive, and only USB1.1 ports. No option to boot from USB, but I can choose to boot from CD-ROM. It will boot from my USB-connected external DVD drive, an LG GP50, when choosing the boot from CD-ROM option..
I can boot into antiX from the optical drive most of the time - it's not consistent, but good enough. Curiously, a burned CD will not boot - the drive seems to be in constant seek mode - but a burned DVD will. XP sees and can use the optical drive.
Once I get to the antiX desktop, the installer is the only thing that will launch. The installer will go as far as allowing me to choose the installation partition, but when I click on yes to continue with the installation, the installer quits. There is no external drive access once I get to the antiX desktop. I have tried booting with the nousb2 option, but the boot fails. Is there support for USB1.1 in this version of antiX?
Any help with this appreciated. I have googled Linux on a Thinkpad X22, but all the info is quite old and the installations are way more complex than I really want to get into. And most require a Windows98 boot disk....
Thanks.

USB 1.1 is no problemo. Many of us members have usb 1.1 gear. So don't concern yourself about that.
Have you md5sum checked your antix iso before burning a dvd disk ? How did you burn the disk?
384MB ram? You should use the cli installer option offered.

I am no code monkey. Just a scooter tramp that learned Linux using this distro. I own atom netbooks with no cd drive or usb boot in bios. I use a external usb cd/dvd drive on those . I make a PLOP CD

Then if using windows XP. I'd make my antix live usb using

Plug it into my usb 1.1 port. Boot up and pick dvdrom boot. Boot PLOP. Pick usb boot like in the video shown. Then boot my antix/rufusmade pendrive. Pick cli install from menu. Then follow the prompts from there.
Edit: Just learned. TapaTalk forum layout embeds youtube videos on the forum now. That is a new perk on me.

Thanks for your suggestions. I had forgotten about Plop. I had used it in the past.
Funny thing - booting from the plop CD in the external drive connected to one USB port, and choosing to boot from USB with a bootable antiX USB stick inserted in the other port, caused the system to boot from the plop CD....again.
Anyway, booting from CD is not consistent nor reliable. I'm thinking now that the laptop doesn't provide enough power to the USB ports for the optical drive. Powered USB hub is on its way.
I'll keep you posted.

I could/can boot a live usb on an old machine that only has USB 1.1, maybe your machine would boot from one(?) as it acts like a CD, not sure but might be worth a try. :)

I could use this method on an old Compaq that won't boot from the USB port.
Thanks

If you have more than one usb port then I suggest booting from the antiX live-cd with the live-usb plugged into another port and select F4 Options --> from=usb. This will cause us to finish the boot from the usb stick, like what you wanted to do with plop. If the problem is power to the disc drive then this may solve it without requiring new hardware. If the disc drive is treated as a usb device then use the label or the uuid of the live-usb with the cheat"blab=$LABEL" or"buuid=$UUID*". With the uuid, only need the first few numbers/letters followed by an asterisk.soundtech wrote:Funny thing - booting from the plop CD in the external drive connected to one USB port, and choosing to boot from USB with a bootable antiX USB stick inserted in the other port, caused the system to boot from the plop CD....again.

Thanks for that suggestion. There are 2 USB ports. I will give that a try.BitJam wrote: If you have more than one usb port then I suggest booting from the antiX live-cd with the live-usb plugged into another port and select F4 Options --> from=usb.
