Good reminder about ethernet. I happen to have a wireless dongle that has worked once the card gets killed. But I can't be sure I'm going to be able to rely on that.

Success!

I used dolphin-oracle's suggestion of dpkg-reconfigure broadcom-sta-dkms as a first-try solution after wireless again conked out after installing the new kernel. And bingo, broadcom wireless is back. (In my case I could go online with a wireless dongle.)

Many thanks for the various suggestions. It's good to have a range of possible solutions for others who might have this problem. What a great forum this is...
