some success with the HDMI. I installed VLC and it can play to the HDMI device through it's audio menu options. So far I have not been able to get anything else to play to the HDMI though. No bootime switches were required for this scenario.

Research indicates that kernels later than 3.13 shouldn't need the radeon.audio=1 switch.

Oldest Wireless Desktop Tower in Shop. IBM M41. 2004.
Wireless USB. Works. In inxi report.
Sound works. I guess I should mention all things worked on the boxes I successfully booted on.
I thought the eject cd glitch on shutdown SamK mentioned was a already known but +1 from me on that bug.

I used vesa cheat code on boot since I knew this had old nvidia.
This box runs MX-14 semi OK. It is no race machine but gets the job done.
Thanks again SamK for posting. I wish you lived down the block
so I could maybe learn how you got your boxes to boot 3.14.

I did not see the note about the first Alpha 1 build until late this evening, so I am downloading the software now. At this point I'll probably just try running it live, but if needed, I have two potential systems where I could install it. My two platforms are both systems built prior to 2010 - in the 2008-2009 vintage; both have always worked well with previous releases of antiX, so if there are any issues at all, they'd be clear regressions in functionality. The two are a Gateway 2000 17" portable and a Lenovo 300 Y410 laptop. The Gateway has Broadcom 4311 wireless firmware and the Lenovo has Intel 3945 wireless firmware, so those represent two different interfaces on systems where the only other significant difference is the monitor size; both are portable/laptop screens. The Gateway has a 17" diagonal screen with 1400x900 resolution; the Lenovo uses 1200x800 resolution, I believe.

I'll run the inxi report once I get the download completed and a chance to test it out.

I am running live now on my Gateway portable. This is the system that I use most often, and it can also be the most problematic because it has a Broadcom 4311 Wireless firmware card. The good news is that antiX has this one right once again and I started up (and even customized a bit, running live), so GOOD NEWS from here; no obvious regressions, at least in the live booting image and the Web browser and networking hardware also works.

helptext for F7 boot menu mentions these options: menus, custom, both, reset
but the available F7 option values are labeled"off","save", and"reset"

controlCentre --}"edit login options"
Choose any item in (or do not change) selectbox and click"Ok" button
Bug: dialog pops up stating"default display manager not found. Restart X?"
Behavior-wise, seems no problem exists. Upon startx, the selected display manager is the one invoked.
The"bug" is the inexplicable, seemingly incorrect,"not found" dialog errormsg

Trying to understand what, and how to fix, problem of monitor not being correctly detected... I created a new pendrive and started afresh.
Monitor is 23" AOC flat panel LED with a native 1900x1080 display resolution. It is attached via HDMI.

First boot,"default" option of F6 boot menu... results in a blank screen
"vesa" F6 option result: max available resolution is 1280x1024
"safe" F6 option result: max available resolution is 1280x1024

ControlCenter --} Session --} set display resolution
arandr shows only"default" input is available for selection

? Fix by editing Xorg.conf, adding modes to its"default Screen" section?
? The xorg version in wheezy doesn't know about widescreen monitors?

edit:
During my previous pendrive install, I did manager to solve this problem...
...but I was stabbing in the dark and had tried several things, and neglected to note (in a good safe place) what worked to fix.

the alpha iso contains 98Mb+ fonts (seems excessive, and the chosen fontsets seem non-optimal)(many lack hinting instructions)
and fonts displayed in urxvt look awful (no antialiasing applied?)

On the Live system you can set the default resolution with the xres boot parameter such as:

xres=1900x1080
but this won't help if your card and driver don't support the resolution you want. Post the output of:

inxi -G
that will tell us what we are dealing with. Use the"safe" video mode.

If"safe" works but the default does not, that usually indicates the card and driver are defaulting to a resolution that your monitor can't handle.

If you have an nvidia card then you are going to want to install the proprietary nvidia driver since the blank screen indicates the nouveau driver is screwing up. This is just a hunch. There have been several reports of a regression that kept HDMI from reporting resolutions correct. Again, I think this is in the driver, not the server.

A search(linux detect resolution hdmi) could be useful.
