I posted a question about this problem in another thread but it was probably in the wrong place. I installed antix 12 test as a guest in VirtualBox and when I tried to install the guest additions against the 3.2.9 kernel they wouldn't build. I ended up installing the 3.2.0 686 kernel and they did build and install. I have another debian spin that had the same symptoms and the developer said he would be happy to tell how he fixed it if anyone is interested.
