Phasing out i686 support

Due to the decreasing popularity of i686 among the developers and the community, we have decided to phase out the support of this architecture.
The decision means that v17.0.3 ISO will be the last that allows to install 32 bit Manjaro Linux. September and October will be our deprecation period, during which i686 will be still receiving upgraded packages. Starting from November 2017, packaging will no longer require that from maintainers, effectively making i686 unsupported.

kind regards
Philip Müller
Project Lead
FWIW, the phaseout deprecation period mentioned in the Manjaro announcement is consistent with that announced by their upstream, Arch Linux, back in Jan 2017

We're in the minority these days with 32 bit systems. I am fortunate (I guess) to have both 32 and 64 bit systems, none of which are"new" at this point.

My phone is my newest hardware 😀

So this is a bit more bold a statement than what ubuntu released.  Since they are not requiring i386 architecture packaging, it could make things like 32 bit drivers and the steam client a little more interesting to keep up to date.   I suppose just because they don't"require" it doesn't mean it won't be done for packages that need it.

I am not hip on Arch linux. I know Ubuntu Main dropped some support for older gear. But Xubuntu, LUbuntu, stepped up and continued with support.

I guess you know where I am going with this?

Only Bits near me is" Bacon". I guess main Ubuntu will package still for 32 bit where Arch says go screw yourself.

^------ au contraire:

The list of now-infected (per without-systemd.org, which I help maintain) debian-derived distros hasn't grown disproportionately in recent months. The only (to me) disappointment has been Knoppix 8.1

GALPon organization has recently released a debian-basedsystemd-free"PicarOS" (targeting teachers/students).
OviOS Linux (not a"desktop" distro) has now _dropped_ systemd from its latest release.
The Docker project rebased (from Ubuntu) to systemd-free Alpine Linux earlier this year.
A new, interesting, player has entered the scene (sysV init)

(has been reviewed at distrowatch).
VoidLinux has gained significant traction throughout this year.
Several devuan-based distros other than Refracta are gaining traction this year: Dyne:bolic, Star, GNUinos, Crowz...

...and Arch-based

type of dude. Probably mostly because of how they converse on their forum.
You are not afraid of sid/experimental? GTK3 is on your blacklist? You don't need no systemd? Your computer is from the last decade, has a RAM size of three digits and a CPU that powers a solar calculator? You give a flying f___k about < edited by rok for the kiddies > GPT and UEFI, just want to give your smelly Pentium a new home? You promise not to use btrfs and lvm? To update, upgrade and install packages you use the excellent 'apt' command? You believe in beards, sandals, marijuana and/or clicky keyboards? You like process trees that don't need a scroll wheel to display all their beauty? You know that 'sudo bbqinstall' or 'sudo bbqinstaller' will put the live system onto a prepared partition? You remember that the passwords for the live session are 'bbq' and 'root'? You have heard of the mighty 'adduser' wrapper? You absolutely want to change to root password after installation because 'root' is simply not safe enough?
The BBQ Philosophy: General
  1. eat what's served and season to your liking
  2. when there's meat, don't fill your stomach with veggies
  3. stop whining
  4. be proud of breakage
  5. less is more (keep it stupid, sh_thole) < edited bt rok again >
  6. try the untried
  7. give obscure sh_t a chance < which is why rok likes how they converse >
  8. fit a CD if you can, fit a 512MB stick whenever possible
  9. roast your own!
  10. if there's a shell script for something, use it
  11. expect nothing

Vuu-Do Linux has a 32bit, based on Devuan with Openbox.

I'm presently using Vuu-Do (64bit) on a couple of my netbooks/laptops, as well as my AntiX installations.
(I agree, BBQ is always interesting.......)
