Hi, I like the four workspaces Antix gives by default (I'm used to that with Debian)

I've always set up Gnome to switch between workspaces with Alt-1, Alt-2, Alt-3, Alt-4
but I can't find (even with Google) how to do that in Antix. Is it possible?
Cheers, cr

The method of using keyboard accelerator keys to select workspaces depends on which window manager or desktop environment you are using. If, for example, you are using IceWM, I happen to have Ctrl-1 through Ctrl-4 set up as the keys to switch between workspaces, and I have them set up in the file ~/.icewm/preferences. These settings can be changed in this text editable file.

If you are using something else, there are configuration files associated with each environment, and the syntax, while similar, is definitely different in each of them. All of the window managers and desktop environments provided through antiX and Debian do have text editable configuration files.

If you cannot find them or you need help editing them, please tell us what you are using and we can show you how to configure them.

Welcome cr01. You probably had a hard time Googling for the answer because antiX gives you a selection of different window managers to choose from. The default in antiX-full is ICEwm and the default in antiX-base is Fluxbox. I think the defaults both use Rox to provide desktop icons. You can choose to have SpaceFM provide the desktop icons or you can choose to have no desktop icons.

says that you use Ctrl-Alt-N to switch to desktop N. This sounds fishy to me because Ctrl-Alt-N is used for switching between Linux virtual consoles.

You can use the F5 menu in the bootloader of the LiveCD/USB (on antiX-13 and later) to choose which window manager to use. You can also log out of X and the use F1 in the SLiM login screen to select the window manager.

Oops. Just got ninja'ed by masinick. I'll post this anyway since it has a link to instructions for Fluxbox.

Hope the suggestions are helpful; if not, please follow up and we'll do the same. Hope you enjoy antiX!

Hi, many thanks for the very quick and helpful replies.

I realised after I posted I should probably have said which WM I was using.
I'm using icewm (I think, confirmed by the fact that editing its config file works : )

In fact the default in the file was set to Ctrl-Alt-N - which did work when I tried it - I changed it to Alt-N anyway as it's easier to do one-handed. I hadn't realised just how much I used Alt-N workspace swicthing until I tried getting along without it.

Many thanks again and I think i've learned another lesson, 'when in doubt, have a snoop in the config file' . This is almost like the old days before Linux got so sophisticated.

I'm a little puzzled here. Have you lost a workspace? My antiX has five. __{{emoticon}}__

Fluxbox, I believe, has FIVE work spaces; IceWM, by default, generally has four; you can change either of them whether this is the case or not.

Proof indeed that Fluxbox is the best __{{emoticon}}__

My life was so incomplete before Fluxbox __{{emoticon}}__

Just think, that extra workspace can increase productivity by 25%. Let's hope no Capitalists catch on __{{emoticon}}__

You can do the same with just about any window manager; Fluxbox simply defaults to five work spaces, most others default to four. A few distros cut it down to one or two, but the window managers typically - except for Fluxbox, default to five.
Personal preference, easily changed if you know how to edit config files. They all have relatively simple syntax.

Like this for example?

I love masinick in his Yoda/Dumbledore-ish mode. He talks as if we are children and this is correct - cr01 needed help, masinick supplied that help in a clear & concise form. OK, it was dull, but so what? I hope that cr01 has the answer he needs.

Alanarchy is our joker. He is the Clown in Twelfth Night, Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream. He bares his arse and delivers truth as conundrumical, (a word I've just made up), ambiguous, aphorisms.

We are privileged to have both of them.

I do indeed have the answer I need, and a good hint for future queries - 'have a snoop around in the config file'.

This is a very helpful forum, thanks everybody.

Ah, O-level English Lit, with the Battelaxe.

It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
