I found this trick to have abiword open in a non-English language.

Open a terminal, urxvt ot roxterm and type:

LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 abiword

LANG= whatever you wish.

eg
LANG=el_GR.UTF-8 abiword
LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 abiword
LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 abiword
LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8 abiword

You may need to set up locales.
#dpkg-reconfigure locales

and set the ones you want
