The guides will also soon be added to the locally installed FAQ.

In Brief
1-to-1 Assistance is a simple way to privately share the desktop of one system with another system.
A system may perform either of two roles:
  • Receive assistance from someone else
  • Provide assistance to someone else
The receiver allows their local desktop to be shared. The provider is allowed to share the remote desktop. Both receiver and provider see the same desktop on their screens.

The receiver and provider make contact across either the internet or local network. The connection is automatically encrypted to provide privacy during the session. The provider can operate the desktop of the receiver system, even though it may be on the other side of the world, or in the same room.

1-to-1 Voice is a simple way to talk privately with the user of another system.
A system may perform either of two roles:
  • Call a 1-to-1 Voice Service Provider
  • Provide a 1-to-1 Voice Service for a Caller
The caller and provider make contact across either the internet or local network. The connection is automatically encrypted to provide privacy during the call. The conversation happens in real time in a similar manner to a telephone call.

Both apps are self contained. Except for an ISP, connections across the internet do not depend upon the availability of third party services. Creation of external facilities or registration with their providers are not required. Additional financial commitment is not needed.

Both apps are designed with simplicity of operation in mind. Someone with limited technical skills (the receiver in 1-to-1 Assistance or the caller in 1-to-1 Voice) can use the app by entering only the IP address of the person providing the assistance or the voice service. Because the receiver/caller is presumed to have zero technical ability, they are not required to forward any ports. Additionally, both apps automatically take care of establishing a secure encrypted connection before the session is allowed to begin.

Both apps are independent and do not depend upon each other. Either may be used in a standalone role. The benefits of both system operators being able to talk to each other while sharing the same desktop makes the apps obvious companions. For those who may not want to (or may not be able to) hold a voice conversation, 1-to-1 Assistance also provides text chat.

Usability
The suite is well suited to running on both ancient and modern kit. With both apps running on a laptop from approximately 1998, (single core Celeron 1295MHz with 384MB RAM) the CPU load is around 35% and the memory used around 130MB. These include running antiX-15 using IceWM plus ROX-Term and Htop to get the info.
